Sthenolagnia

Word For The Day
Sthenolagnia is a fetish defined as ‘sexual arousal from demonstration of strength or muscles’. The term was coined by the eminent German psychologist Magnus Hirschfeld sometime in the late 1800s. The root etymology comes to us from Stheno who in Greek mythology was one of the Gorgons, vicious female monsters with brass hands, sharp fangs and hair of living venomous snakes. Lagnia is Greek for lust, salaciousness, a sexual predilection. So the next time some joker calls you a perv for drooling over sexy muscle girls just say ‘excuse me my good fellow but I just so happen to be persuing my studies into the field of sthenolagnia‘.

Excuse me my good fellow, please allow me to nitpick your etymology:

lagno- is a Greek root, not a Latin one.

    • It is possible that Herr Doktor Hirschfeld intended stheno- to refer to the gorgon of that name … but Stheno’s name itself comes from the word sthenos “strength.” So Occam’s Razor suggests we not look too fixedly to this particular gorgon ;)

That said, I’ve somehow spent all these years as a muscle-fetishist, and a lover of words without knowing this term. What the hell? How on earth did this happen? Thanks for setting me straight.

I stumbled on your blog for the first time the other night. So far I am very impressed!

Correct you are sir, and have amended the post to show the true origin of lagno. I guess I didn’t delve far enough into the root of stheno and agree Dr. H may well have meant to use it at its most base meaning in this instance.

Glad you stumbled in and appreciate your feedback and comments. Enjoyed your photographs and blog as well .. great work!
